This week we started Bullying Prevention Talks for grades 1st -5th (2nd grade will start next week due to a scheduling issue).   The sessions will run for the next 4 weeks.  This week the lessons for grades 1st and 3rd grades talked about Recognizing Bullying.  The session worked on students understanding the definition of bullying and then being able to identify it in real life situations.

Bullying is defined as:
  • Someone is being mean on purpose
  • It happens over and over again
  • The person it's happening to hasn't been able to make it stop
  • It is unfair and one-sided
4th and 5th grades reviewed the 3 R's of bullying:
Recognize - understanding the definition of bullying
Report - knowing who they can talk to about bullying - a trusted adult
Refuse - standing up to a bully with an assertive voice (if they feel comfortable doing so)

(INFORMATION PROVIDED BY SECOND STEP BULLYING PREVENTION UNITS)

Also, I read a great article about the differences between being mean, rude, and/or bullying.  I thought the author, Signe Whitson, did a great job of describing and defining each action.  Check out the link below to read the article.
